One man is dead after an accident in Harlan County.

Police say 25 year old Michael Hensley lost control of a water tanker at the intersection of Daws Branch Road and Highway 421 in Bledsoe.

This is all that's left of a truck that crashed along Highway 421 in Bledsoe Monday afternoon.

The driver died and now the trucking company he worked for is in some trouble.

“This vehicle was only supposed to be up on the mine property. It's not supposed to be down this far. The company owners have been cited,” says Walter Szczepan of Kentucky State Police.

Troopers say Michael Hensley lost control of the water tanker coming down Daws Branch from a mine job - without registration, insurance or a valid license.

Police say it's possible slick conditions played a role in the crash.

“It had rained all the way from Cumberland to here as I tried to respond to this,” says Szczepan.

The truck went off the road and landed upside down in the creek bed. The force of the crash separated the tanker from the truck. Hensley died instantly.

“Coming off the mountain with the weight of the truck, it’s raining. It's just a lot of weight to stop at the last minute,” says Szczepan.

The crash shut down the highway for several hours and left many in the community asking why.

Officials with Saylor Trucking Incorporated declined to comment on the crash.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration is also investigating.
