Route 33 reopened following truck accident
A driver has been injured in a tractor-trailer accident that closed part of Route 33 North near Snydersville for several hours on Friday morning and at one point backed up northbound traffic into Northampton County, state police said.
The accident happened shortly after 9 a.m. on the section of Route 33 between four-lane 209 and Interstate 80. The road was reopened at about 1:30 p.m.
A Werner tractor-trailer was heading south on Route 33 toward four-lane Route 209, approaching the overpass, when for unknown reasons it crossed the median into the northbound lanes and jackknifed, hitting a U.S. Food Service tractor-trailer. The U.S. Food Service rig was knocked against the underside wall of the overpass, causing the trailer's back door to fall off onto the road, and came to rest just north of the overpass.
The Werner rig came to rest just south of the overpass, against an embankment, with the tractor and trailer facing in opposite directions. The impact knocked the tractor's diesel engine out onto the road.
Witnesses said the injured Werner driver staggered out and he later was taken by ambulance to Pocono Medical Center.
