GALLITZIN, CAMBRIA COUNTY - Emergency workers responded in force because of the danger presented by those chemicals. The truck overturned about nine this morning on State Route Thirty Six in Gallitizin Township Cambria County.

The wreck occurred on a snowy, slippery highway just east of where the Coupon Gallitizin Road meets State Route Thirty Six near the Burger Hut lunch stand. The overturned Culligan truck was hauling a variety of water treatment chemicals at the time. The leader of the Cambria County Haz-mat team said there was a small chemical spill involving potassium manganate, chlorine, and a resin.

Because of a danger that could develop if those chemicals mixed, this one vehicle traffic wreck became a Haz-mat clean up operation. Bystanders were being kept a significant distance from the accident scene and both lanes of State Route Thirty Six was blocked off for several hours during the clean up. The driver of the truck was taken from the scene by ambulance but his injuries did not appear to be severe.

Clean up was completed just after noon and and the road was re-opened at that time. Leaders of the Haz-mat clean up team said they were just pleased the chemicals did not mix and become a bigger problem for them.
