School Bus Accident with a Log Truck

Trucking Accident with School Bus

Investigators say speed was the main factor in a crash involving a tractor trailer and a school bus. As crews try to clean up the scene, everyone is thankful there were no children on board the bus.

The gaping hole torn into the side of this school bus has everyone thinking one thing.

"We are just thankful there are no kids on the bus," says Mike Ewton, Director of Safety for Whitfield County Schools.

Whitfield County Schools says this morning the driver was on the way to pick up students when he was hit by this empty log truck.

Investigators say the truck was speeding along Georgia 201 around 8 this morning.

While trying to slow down for traffic, investigators say he lost control and crossed over into the other lane and hit the school bus head on.

Emergency crews took school bus driver Larry Satcher to the hospital with internal and external injuries.

"We had a lot of witnesses stop and try to help and that says a lot about the community," says Mike Ewton, Director of Safety for Whitfield County Schools.

We spoke to the truck driver on the scene who says this is the first truck accident he's ever had.

"Right now the tractor trailer is at fault for going too fast for road conditions," says Ceballos.

The speed limit here changes from 45 to 55 miles per hour.

Troopers say they believe the truck driver was going close to 60.

Georgia State Patrol Trooper Rick Ceballos says, "There are quite a lot of accidents that happen here so the people here need to slow up and be mindful of everybody else."

Members from both Whitfield County Schools and Investigators say after the investigation is complete they will determine whether the state needs to make any safety changes on the Highway.
