OAKLAND — A big-rig hauling rice on westbound Interstate 80 crashed just near the offramp to West Grand Avenue this morning, forcing the CHP to close the offramp for about five hours.

About 7:45 a.m., the truck careened into a series of crash barrels, spilling sand all over the roadway. The cargo of 4,000 pounds of rice spilled out as well, creating a huge mess all over the road, California Highway Patrol Officer Peter Van Eckhardt said.

The truck driver suffered minor injuries and officers on the scene called for an ambulance, Van Eckhardt said.

The CHP identified the truck as belonging to Mike Ramani Trucking Company.

The offramp is an elevated roadway, and the trailer itself veered up onto the right guard rail, a portion of it hanging exposed about 30 feet above the ground, Van Eckhardt said.

"It (was) basically straddling the guardrail," he said.

The cause of the accident was determined to be an unsafe turn, a CHP officer said. Drugs or alcohol did not appear to be factors in the crash.

Officers reopened the offramp about 1 p.m., the CHP said.
